L’aeroporto di Lucera era situato a circa 13 km a O-NO di Foggia, in Puglia.
L’aeroporto fu costruito alla fine del 1943 dal Corpo degli Ingegneri dell’Esercito degli Stati Uniti come parte del Foggia Airfield Complex, una serie di aeroporti militari situati entro un raggio di 40 km da Foggia. Aveva ampie vie di rullaggio e aree di parcheggio in cemento, un’ampia area per il personale e una torre di controllo in acciaio. L’aerodromo fu inaugurato nel febbraio 1944 e supportò le operazioni dei B-17, nonché i gruppi di caccia e il quartier generale di comando e controllo della 15th Air Force.

Lucera airport was located approximately 13 km W-NW of Foggia, in Puglia.
The airport was built in late 1943 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Foggia Airfield Complex, a series of military airfields located within a 40 km radius of Foggia. It had wide concrete taxiways and parking areas, a large staff area, and a steel control tower. The airfield opened in February 1944 and supported B-17 operations as well as fighter groups and the command and control headquarters of the 15th Air Force.

Ho visitato il luogo dove si trovava l’aeroporto tre volte durante le mie vacanze; purtroppo oggi dell’aeroporto non c’è più traccia; tutta la zona è tornata ad essere coperta da colture agricole. Solo guardando dall’alto è ancora possibile distinguere il tracciato della pista di decollo. Dalla Strada Statale n.17 è possibile prendere una strada secondaria che attraversa l’area un tempo occupata dall’avio-superficie.

I visited the place where the airfield was three times during my holidays and yes, unfortunately today there is no longer any trace of the airfield; the whole area has returned to being covered by agricultural crops.
Only with a view from the sky can you still make out the layout of the take-off runway.
From State Road n.17 it is possible to take a secondary road that crosses the area once occupied by the airfield.
