ORDINE DI BATTAGLIA
Uno specifico approfondimento dedicato alle modifiche subite dalla formazione di volo durante la missione di bombardamento.
- In 2nd flight 1st group, for the A/C #42-39986, Lt. Peterson is listed as the pilot in the post-mission list. In the order of battle, for this A/C, Lt. Daum was indicated as the pilot. The replacement of the pilot before take-off is obvious. ↩︎
- In 3rd flight 1st group, the A/C #42-31605. Hammar’s crew (reserve) replaces the A/C #42-30329. Whitten’s crew before take-off. ↩︎
- It is probable that on 2nd group 2nd flight he was attached to A/C #42-38077. Wood’s crew, reserve aircraft. The positioning in this flight is however a hypothesis. ↩︎
- This “flight”, the third of the 2nd group, is the one that actually bombed Pontedera (see the memoirs of Lieutenant Coppedge). In the document NARA RG 18, Entry 7a, Box 770, Daily Status Reports Jan.1943 – Feb.1944, it is instead indicated that it was the 2nd “flight” of the 2nd group that hit Pontedera; a different disposition of the “flights” determined during the flight by the leader of the group is possible ↩︎
